Glove Leather Compared: Cowhide, Goatskin, Sheepskin and Pigskin

A plain guide to the four leathers used most in work gloves, and how grain and split leather differ.

Most leather work gloves are made from one of four hides. Each has its own feel, strength and price. Knowing the basics makes it easier to write a specification and compare quotations.

Grain or split?

A hide is thick enough to be sliced into layers. The top layer, with the natural surface, is called grain. It is smoother, more flexible and handles light moisture better. The lower layers are called split. They have a rough, suede-like surface, are very hard-wearing and cost less. Many gloves combine both.

Cowhide

The most common work glove leather. Thick, strong and good against abrasion. Cowhide gloves can feel a little stiff at first and soften with use. A safe choice for general and heavy work, and the usual base for welding gloves.

Goatskin

Goatskin contains natural oils (lanolin) that keep it soft. It is thinner than cowhide for the same strength, which gives better feel. Popular for driver gloves, assembly gloves and TIG welding gloves.

Sheepskin

The softest of the four, with excellent feel. It is less durable than goatskin or cowhide, so it suits light work, driving and fine assembly rather than heavy handling.

Pigskin

Pigskin has small pores that let air through, so hands sweat less. It stays fairly soft after getting wet and drying. A good middle choice for general work in warm conditions.

Quick comparison

  • Toughest: cowhide, especially split
  • Best feel: sheepskin, then goatskin
  • Best balance of feel and strength: goatskin
  • Breathes well: pigskin

What to put in your specification

State the hide, grain or split, and the colour. If thickness matters to you, ask the supplier to measure it on the sample and write it on the quotation. Leather is natural, so small variations in colour and grain are normal; the approved sample is the best reference.
